THE raising of champagne glasses heralded the official launch of next year's single-handed transatlantic race.
The 12th Original Single Handed Transatlantic Race (STAR) for 2005 ~ which starts from Plymouth on May 29 next year - was kicked off in suitable fashion in front of more than 100 supporters at the Royal Western Yacht Club (RWYC).
Basil Butter, commodore of the RWYC - whibh is organising the historic event - said interest in the race has already surpassed expectations.
"We have just confirmed our 20th entry in the race which is ahead of the number of entries we expected at this point!' he said.
"So far we have received entries from the Netherlands, the UK and the US, and France.
"We fully expect to have up to 50 entries from across the world on the startline."
Yesterday saw Michael Hockin, chairman of London and Wesitcouhtry Estates Ltd and owner of Faraday Mill Business Park, announced his sponsorship of the race entitled the Faraday Mill OSTAR 2005.
The RWYC announced earlier this year that it was returning to its roots by splitting up professional sailors and amateurs. Following the 2000 race, it had become clear that it was no longer feasible to combine professional and amateur sailors in the same event.
The OSTAR is open to amateur sailors on yachts between 30ft and 50ft.
He added: "The race has been very well received in the yachting world and people are pleased that the transatlantic race has been split into two events."
Mr Hockin Said as a Plymothian he wants the city to blossom into
a vibrant city of the future.
Like many he believes its future lies in celebrating and promoting its ties with the ocean, arid that is why he is sponsoring next year's event.
"We should have many more events like this in Plymouth," he added. "We should be the envy of the world in terms of the number and quality of yacht races we organise."
Plymouth businessman Bob Beggs - who took part in the race in 1992 and 1996 - described the race as the epitome of single-handed sailing.
"It is a fantastic challenge from day one," he said.
"Whether it is finding the funds to buy or hire a boat or working out how you can take three months off work, it Is the real deal. Taking part in the race is the easy part for many, it is a great race."
