Transatlantic Race To Help School

The official charity of this year's single-handed transatlantic race has been announced as the Dame Hannah Rogers School, in Ivybridge.
Race sponsors London & Westcountry Estates announced that the school, for young people with physical disabilities, will benefit from the high-profile race, which will set sail from Plymouth in May.
The school is currently fundraising to raise cash to build a ?1.8 million care wing.
Chair of appeals and marketing Diane Hockin said: "The Dame Hannah Rogers School is a charity I have worked closely with for some months and am delighted that it has been chosen to be the official charity for the Faraday Mill OSTAR. Dane Hannah, which already offers a variety of support to the children here, still needs help.
"Many local companies are generously giving their time and materials to help this project, however, we still need to raise ?1.8 million.
"Hopefully, the support from OSTAR will provide a vital part in the future of our school to help those less fortunate than ourselves."
The race, between Plymouth and Newport Rhode Island, starts on May 29.
After the success of last year's high-profile Transat race, the city is once more set to take centre stage in the maritime calendar. The 12th Original Single Handed Transatlantic Race (OSTAR) has already attracted more than 40 entries from UK-based and international sailors.
The race was launched by the Royal Western Yacht Club in 1960, when it was won by Sir Francis Chichester, who arrived 40 days, 12 hours and 30 minutes after leaving Plymouth.
Since then, the race has been run by the RWYC every four years.
Following the 2000 race, the decision was taken to divide the fleet into two, with yachts over 50ft competing last year in the Transat and those of 50ft and under due to race this year.
